Marine Conservation & Volunteering

On your FDVC (Fiji Dive Volunteer [Marine] Conservation) program, you use your dive training and volunteerism to contribute in a special way to your Fijian community and global reef health.

(In association with your dive provider and PADI Project Aware)

Marine Conservation Program

According to Fijian tradition, some fishing areas were set aside as ‘taboo’ and not to be fished. This allowed marine life to develop and flourish and was a major part of the subsistence way of life. Unfortunately, like many other places around the world, over time these traditions have come under pressure and there are now growing areas suffering from marine life depletion and ecological damage.

a fantastic opportunity for you to make a difference to the local marine environment, as you volunteer on an existing marine conservation project in Savusavu Bay

As part of this volunteer project abroad you have a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the local marine environment, as you volunteer on existing diving conservation projects in Savusavu Bay FDVC’s marine biologist provides a marine conservation training program and you will also be certified in Reef Check. Upon becoming a certified Reef Check diver, you will be qualified to participate in reef monitoring surveys and coral reef conservation initiatives worldwide.

FDVC programs provide a fantastic opportunity for you to make a difference to the local marine environment, as you volunteer on an existing marine conservation project in Savusavu Bay. You will collect coral reef data in order to support an existing Marine Protection Area (MPA) and also contribute to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network. Your assistance is extremely important as reef surveys assist local communities, as owners of the traditional fishing rights, to establish, and further develop MPAs and keep coral reefs pristine and healthy.

There are a number of other ways in which you may assist with underwater conservation issues in association with our dive provider and PADI Project Aware:

  • Cleaning up the sea floor around the yacht harbour and wharf in Savusavu
  • Assisting in the eradication of the Crown-of-thorns starfish, which is a large nocturnal sea star that preys directly on live coral
  • Clearing local reefs of entangled fishing line

Your contribution through volunteerism is invaluable. We know you will feel good about returning something to the community, and that you will have fun doing it!
